The Biggest SEO Mistake Content Marketers Make

his summer, I conducted empathy interviews a bunch of our clients and prospects to understand their content marketing challenges. One big pain point: SEO.

SEO remains a huge part of content marketing, as it should be. High-ranking content creates long-term value for your brand. It’s a key part of what Tomasz Tunguz calls the compounding returns of content marketing.

When you invest in content and a strong SEO strategy, you drive more and more valuable traffic to your site over time, resulting in compounding returns on your content marketing investment.

The problem with SEO is that many companies’ content SEO strategy looks like this:

Step 1: The content team creates a pretty good article.

Step 2: They pass it off to the SEO team, who stuff the piece with a bunch of keywords that make it nearly unreadable and press publish.

Step 3: The content team cries, and the piece doesn’t perform well against search anyway BECAUSE THAT’S NOT HOW SEO WORKS ANYMORE.

Even in 2020, I see this same mistake made over and over again. Instead, marketers should:

A) Factor a target keyword into content planning and production from the beginning, so that it’s naturally integrated into the piece. Since Google has shifted to semantic search, you want to focus on long-tail keywords associated with a question that someone’s trying to answer. (i.e., “What makes good content marketing,” “content marketing tips”). By answering the question at hand, you build SEO into the editorial process and avoid keyword stuffing.

B) Prioritize quality over everything else. Nowadays, Google prioritizes backlinks and E-A-T (Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) ratings in their rankings. The easiest way to drive both of those up is to create interesting content with original research and reporting related to your industry. You need to create content that inspires people to link, share, and spend time on page. And you need Google to see you as an expert in the core topics you’re covering.

In 2020, this is what matters. Traditional keyword stuffing is now terrible for your SEO. And mediocre content that won’t earn links is essentially worthless. Focus on publishing original research and reporting that helps answer your audience’s big questions. Focus on quality over quantity. Bring your SEO team in at the beginning of the content planning process—and then politely kick them out of the editing room. If you do that, I promise: You’ll see greater SEO results this year.

Break the Internet! How to Launch a Successful Digital Marketing Campaign for Your Law Firm

Did you know that 15 percent of state surveys miss actual harm and jeopardy nursing home residents are facing?

When these cases come to light, these people need legal representation. If they don’t know about your law firm, they won’t be able to contact you. The ability for people to be able to find your business is why you need an effective digital marketing campaign.

In this article, we are going to talk about marketing a law practice and how you can use the internet to get in front of your target market.

Launching a Successful Digital Marketing Campaign

As you are learning more about launching your firm’s campaign, your goal should be getting your firm in front of your ideal customer. While wide-reaching approach type marketing plans may be the norm, you don’t want normal. When you have a well-planned campaign, you will be able to pass your competition with smart law firm marketing ideas.

When you become a lawyer, you probably didn’t expect to need to learn digital marketing skills for your business. While you may not have gone to school for marketing, you’ll need to get good at it if you want to bring in a steady stream of clients.

Focus on UX (User Experience)

User experience should be the center of your marketing efforts. Your website should allow potential clients to find what they need easily.

Setting up your site’s navigation in a common-sense way will make it easier for people to use the site. Keep visible options to a minimum so extra buttons don’t distract users from taking desired actions. Important call to actions should be positioned strategically.

Use YouTube to Get in Front of Potential Clients

Video marketing is a powerful way to get your message in front of your target market. When people watch your videos, it is easier for them to connect with your image than words on a page.

When you use video marketing, do keyword research to find terms you want to rank. You might want to rank for terms in your local area, such as lawyer in your city or attorney in your city. Optimizing your videos for certain terms helps your videos show up in the right places.

Make Sure Your Website Is up to Speed

Most legal professionals haven’t checked their website’s speed performance. If your website loads slow, you are likely losing website traffic. Websites that take more than a few seconds to load don’t satisfy visitors’ need for instant gratification.

Downsizing images or using fewer images on a page helps reduce loading times. Remove complicated scripts and any elements you don’t need from your site. If you use the CMS WordPress, make sure you aren’t using any plugins that you don’t need.

Should You Use the Same Landing Page for Email and Online Ads?

A client asks: “Can I use the landing page from an email campaign for online ads, say: search or LinkedIn if it’s promoting the same asset?”

email landing pages response:

In short: no. There’s an appeal to the economies of using one landing page across multiple channels, but the requirements are very different. The good news is that you should still be able to leverage much of the copy, content and creative assets you use for, let’s say: an email landing page, and then adapt that page for online advertising without having to start from scratch.

When a reader arrives at a landing page from an email campaign, he or she has already received a critical mass of information about you and the offer – whether that offer is a white paper, Webinar, demo, or whatever. It’s a relatively safe assumption that he or she is already “sold.” Therefore, the objective of an effective email landing page is to 1) validate that decision, and 2) not get in the way.

Email landing pages should be short and sweet. Here are a few key guidelines to keep in mind:

* Language and design should be consistent with the email to provide a seamless user experience and avoid causing any hesitation (“wait, this isn’t what the email said …”)

* Include an image of the offer, even if it’s just a white paper. (For Webinars, include a photo of the speaker.) Offer photos make the offer more real, more tangible.

* Briefly reinforce key benefits (“what you’ll learn …”) and perhaps include a short excerpt, or highlight, or quote, or testimonial to further underline the value of responding. Just avoid the temptation to add so much new information that you create questions or objections.

* Keep the form above the fold, and short. Make sure any headline above the form (“Exclusive Report”) and button copy (“Download Now”) are action-oriented and consistent with both the offer and how that offer will be fulfilled.

* Sell the offer, not the product. Don’t pitch your company.

Determining Link Quality Within A Link Building Campaign

Evaluating link quality within a link building campaign is critical, because you must ensure you’re building worthwhile links that help you reach your campaign goals.

Every link you build should be a link that you would be proud to show your friends and family, colleagues, and even Google. Building links you would be proud of means building quality links. But what constitutes a “quality link”?

Ever since the introduction of Google’s Penguin algorithm link building has shifted to quality over quantity. Here are some barometers you can use to measure link quality during a campaign:

Relevancy
SEO value
Usefulness
Marketing value

Always scrutinize your links in these four areas to ensure you are building links that will contribute to a successful campaign.

Relevancy

Relevancy offers a great starting point when evaluating link quality.

If the relevancy isn’t there, you know you have an issue right off the bat. Links form online connections between two websites, and without some sort of relevancy these connections wouldn’t make sense.

There are four main types of relevancy to consider, and some are more crucial than others. In order of importance, they are as follows:

Link to page – the contextual relevance of the link on the page
Page to page – the relevance between the page on your website and the page linking
Domain to page – relevance between your site and the page linking
Domain to domain – relevance between your site (as a whole) and their site (as a whole)
Now all of these levels of relevance don’t have to line up perfectly every time, but the overall relevance still needs to be there. If you have any doubt, try to explain the relevance out loud to another person. If you’re struggling the relevance likely isn’t there.

For a more in-depth explanation of relevancy in link building, check out Cory Collins’ article here.

Link Building Basics: Outreach

Welcome to another edition of my ongoing series here on Biznology – link building basics.

So far, we’ve learned the basics of:

Conducting a niche analysis
Performing a site audit
Finding link opportunities
Vetting link prospects
In this post we will cover outreach, one of the most important aspects of link building.

Crafting effective outreach takes practice, persistence, and creativity. Outreach is a skill that you must continue to hone and develop. By mastering the basics of outreach you can establish a foundation from which you can build upon.

Compile a Refined Outreach List

In the last post we learned how to apply the “smell test” to properly vet your link prospects. Now that you have filtered out the irrelevant link opportunities, you can begin to compile a refined outreach list.

Compiling a detailed outreach list will help keep you organized as you work through your outreach initiative. Some key information that you should contain in your outreach list includes:

Name of contact
Email address
Person’s site/company
Position at site/company
Existing Social Profiles
Previous contact/relationship
Date contacted

Working from this list during outreach will keep everything organized and help you track who you’ve contacted and how. Organization is vital to outreach success, and maintaining a well-ordered outreach list will make things easier in the long run.

Crafting Effective Outreach

Due to the fact that outreach inherently involves person-to-person communication, your outreach messages will typically be unique. However, there are some basic best practices  you can follow to improve your chances of success.

Promotional Products Work Week

Next week is “Promotional Products Work Week”! It will take place May 14 – 18, 2018. It is promoted each year by the Promotional Products International Association. This annual event serves as a cornerstone for recognizing the importance of working with promotional professionals, while creating awareness for promotional products as a powerful and effective advertising and marketing medium. Promotional Products Work! Week is an industry-wide event dedicated to celebrating the power of promotional products and the value they create. We are celebrating it by sharing an infographic with 7 Reasons to Use Promotional Products!

63% of recipients pass on promotional products to someone else after using them. When compared to other types of advertising, promotional products have the ability to increase your exposure when others see the recipients using them. It can actually act as an endorsement of your company or brand.

89% of survey respondents could recall the advertiser that gave them promotional products. This is a much higher rate than other types of advertising that cost the same as or even more than promotional product campaigns do. Many consumers easily and immediately forget a commercial they just saw or heard, but carrying around a promotional product or having it sit on your desk every day does much more for recall.

83% of U.S. customers like receiving promotional products with a logo or message. Promotional products are very different from other types of advertising in that they are actually sought after instead of ignored or forwarded through like television commercials. This makes promotional products a unique choice, but also an effective choice.

Of course, effectiveness is the most important metric when it comes to advertising; and promotional products are ranked #1 when it comes to being the most effective advertising tool. After all, they are memorable, sought after, kept for long periods of time, and are the only advertising form that can be passed onto others. This combination of benefits of promotional products are what helps them rank number one.

Promotional items are carried around by 1/3rd of recipients. This speaks volumes about branding as well as to the relationship you are building with your customers and target audience daily.

THE TOP 8 SOCIAL NETWORKS FOR BUSINESS

Recently, Adobe’s CMO.com released their 5th annual CMO Guide to The Social Landscape highlighting the top 8 social networks for businesses.

Adobe evaluated each platform based on 4 criteria: SEO, brand awareness, customer communication, and traffic generation.

The Big 4: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube.

These top networks have been covered each of the last 4 years. And while Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube should be top of mind for any marketer, not all businesses are creating content specifically for these channels

The content that performs well on Facebook can be very different from that which performs well on Twitter and LinkedIn. The audiences on each platform has it’s own expectations, and context.

And YouTube is a totally different thing. Very few brands have teams dedicated to the art of creating effective video and yet many businesses still seek to create “viral videos”. Not every video has to achieve the success of the Corning World of Glass video.

Slideshare: The New Kid On The Block

This year, Adobe added Slideshare to the list. I have been saying for years that Slideshare is one of the greatest opportunities for businesses to create effective content that helps their audience.

I like Slideshare because it is a completely different kind of content from blogs, tweets and videos. It forces you to think visually, to tell a story and to create something that is helpful. It is also one of the top sites for business professionals.

The Niche-Players: Google+, Pinterest, Instagram

I believe Google+ is an important channel because of the role Google plays in search and also because of the growing importance of author rank.

Pinterest and Instagram provide access to a unique audience and the picture-based content is a little different in context from some of the other platforms. Businesses should consider each of these platforms carefully.

4 Tips for Increasing SEM Spend Without Sacrificing Performance

A common headache for any account manager is a decrease in budget. It seldom feels that we’re faced with extra ad dollars, but every once in a while, miracles do exist. While it may seem like an answer to account limitations, there are some things to look out for concerning budget increases. Any large change to an account can require a secondary ramping up period. Much like when a new campaign launches, larger account changes need to build a history with Google to find a sweet spot in performance. Account managers often look at budget increases as a major change requiring special attention. This issue is magnified if the account was already struggling to spend the budget it had been allocated in the first place. In this article, we list four tips for increasing SEM spend without taking a hit, ensuring your performance stays profitable

1. Keyword Expansion

The first step to increasing campaign spend is to expand your keyword focus. Auditing the search queries report is the best place to look for new keywords to add to your campaign as it shows you exactly how people are searching for your business. If you’re not regularly auditing the search query report, you could be missing out on potential keywords, and phrasing of keywords, that would add great value to your program. Long-tail keywords are also a great way to broaden your keyword list, as well as increase traffic, for they typically have a slightly lower cost per click and the quality of traffic is higher. This report can further be utilized as a way to find new negatives that can help you avoid acquiring ad impressions for searches that won’t lead to sales. Implement these tactics and you’re a step closer to fully maximizing the effectiveness of your PPC spend.

2. Geography

When setting up any new search campaign, you must enter a target geography to serve your ads. If your account is limited by budget then your geography might reflect that by choosing only the most important radii, cities, or states. If your focus is niche, even when limited by budget, it’s best practice to start with a larger target area, then reduce as needed. Just be sure that you don’t let this run for too long without checking spend.

In cases where budget is not an issue and you have the freedom to leverage national targeting from the beginning, be aware that more isn’t always better. When given the opportunity to expand your geography to other desired areas, keep in mind your goals and needs, avoid adding cities and states you cannot serve just to ensure the budget is spent. You can also take into consideration geo modifiers. These give you the control to increase coverage on areas that have shown positive results and you can also add negative geo modifiers and area exclusions when expanding. Before adopting this method, though, have in mind the regions you do not want, or are unable, to market to.

Small Business Guide to SEM

Business success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes a solid strategy to grow your small business. Nowadays, digital marketing is something you really should explore to achieve your bottom line, and a channel that you may consider utilizing is Search Engine Marketing (SEM) or search advertising. This entails using paid ads or pay-per-click (PPC) ads to promote your brand or content to increase search engine visibility.

Paid search means “bidding” for placement before the organic search results when users look up a keyword relevant to your business. Obviously, when your brand is at the top of Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs), you get better exposure and can pull in more prospects.

Benefits of SEM for Small Businesses

Competitive advantage

SMBs are at a disadvantage when it comes to competing with big brands. Usually, more established brands are the ones taking the top organic results for popular keywords, but with an excellent SEM strategy, SMBs can one-up their larger competitors.

Understandably, big brands can also afford paid ads, but if you have a smarter plan with more compelling copy, you can differentiate yourself and stand out from the crowd.

Instant awareness

One of the challenges of SMBs is that they have close to zero visibility. Not many consumers will be familiar with your brand, especially if you’re just starting out. However, if you continually show up on top of SERPs for your relevant keywords, you can foster instant brand awareness with otherwise unacquainted users.

Reinforces name recognition

It’s been said that it takes 7–13 touch points before a prospect converts. It’s safe to say that a customer would not readily purchase from you at the first moment they find you online. You need to reinforce recognition so that customers keep your brand top-of-mind once they’ve decided to push through with the purchase.

Although there are numerous blogs and websites dedicated to SEO, sometimes the best way to learn in-depth is by finding an expertly-written book that can explain the intricacies of SEO strategy and tactics.

These are interesting times for books. Books now come in hardcover, paperback, Kindle, Kindle Unlimited (free with subscription), PDF, and audio formats. After experiencing consistent growth for the previous 5 years, ebook sales were actually down about 20% 3 years ago, while analog books were up 7%. Analog books are back, especially with young children. Sales of e-readers declined steeply by more than 40% between 2011 and 2016 as more people use smartphones to read ebooks, according to consumer research group Euromonitor International.

Don't be overwhelmed. There's a way to pull insightful information from your campaigns.

Let's dive into how to understand social media marketing metrics and discuss which you should be measuring.

Just because you're posting content doesn't mean you're reaching a large enough audience. If you aren't, you won't see the engagement and conversion rates you desire to achieve.

Combining this metric with your engagement rate can help paint a broader picture of how well your social media campaign is doing. For instance, you can take the amount of engagement (clicks, shares, and comments) and divide this by reach. The percentage will tell you many of the people you're reaching are participating.

This is critical to identifying your influence and whether or not you're targeting the right people.

The Power of Text: What Is SMS Marketing, and Is It For Your Business?

Did you know that the open rate for SMS is nearly 98%?

Because SMS can offer such incredible open rates, it can be one of the best ways to reach your target audience. But if you want to use SMS to market your business, you may have doubts about where to begin.

You might be unsure of how to get the phone numbers for your campaigns. You may also worry about the kind of messages you should send people, once you have their phone number.

This post aims to provide you with some clarity on how SMS marketing works. Once you’ve read this post, you’ll be able to comfortably answer the question “What is SMS marketing?”

Let’s begin!

What Is SMS marketing?

SMS marketing is a means of marketing that’s based on you sending text messages to people. SMS (short message service) is just another way to describe a text message, and the two terms are interchangeable.

This method of marketing works well, as people carry phones with them everywhere they go. This then makes it easy for you to reach your target audience, no matter where they are.

Additionally, a text message often demands more attention than an email. This is usually down to the fact that not many other companies are using SMS marketing to contact customers.

It’s also worth noting that the notification for a text message often differs to the notification for an email.

SMS notifications are often more audible and can cause the phone to vibrate, whereas emails might not allow for this to happen. Following this, SMS marketing can produce better levels of engagement. That’s because people will quickly check their phone, upon receiving a promotional text message.

What Can You Do with SMS Marketing?

The way you use SMS marketing is going to depend on your business and the kinds of services you offer.

10 Reasons All Businesses Need A Solid Social Media Marketing Campaign

If you want your business to be wildly successful, you need to have a killer social media presence.

Selling fancy socks to teenagers? You can grab their attention on Instagram.

Trying to market a new brand of medication to the elderly? A lot of older people have turned to Facebook for their social interaction.

Social media isn’t a passing fad, it’s a phenomenon that you need to master if you want your business to excel. It can be difficult, however, to know what to do if you’re inexperienced. Luckily, social media marketing isn’t an unconquerable subject.

Here’s why you need to start your campaign immediately.

Benefits of Social Media for Businesses
If you still aren’t convinced that you need to beef up your social media presence, you’ll probably change your mind after reading the rest of this post.

1. Web Traffic

Your product is wonderful. You know exactly who your audience is and what you want to say to them. There’s just one problem- how are you going to find them?

Solely relying on Google searches to find customers is risky. Yes, if you sell dog leashes and someone searches for a leash for Fido, you can buy advertising space to reach that person.

But what about the woman who’s casually browsing the internet, not thinking about her dog at all? Google isn’t going to be enough to open her wallet. But she might open her wallet when she sees pictures of awesome-looking leashes on Instagram.

2. Huge Conversion Rates

Traditional advertising is impersonal. Ads are targeted toward large swaths of the population and fade into the background.

Social media advertising, when done correctly, is aimed towards YOU. Your interests, your likes and dislikes are taken into account. This allows people to become more comfortable with your brand.

That familiarity with your brand can lead to impressive conversion rates.

3. Improved Customer Recognition

If you could, you would probably plaster your brand’s logo everywhere in sight. Obviously, that’s not practical in the real world.

Social media is different. Knowledge of your company can spread fast and organically. Because the posts that you share can be seen by thousands or even millions of people, you’ll be able to reach an audience that you otherwise wouldn’t.

Someone who’s just casually browsing their news feed might hear about your brand because one of their friends re-posted your ad.

Study: Sexual content in movies encourages earlier sex, more casual partners

LOS ANGELES – While it has long been assumed that risqué movies can cause risky behavior, there is now scientific data to back it up.

According to a new study conducted by psychological scientists at Dartmouth University, children who watch features films with sexual content have a tendency to start having sex at a younger age, have more casual sexual partners, and engage in unsafe sexual practices.

Using 1,228 participants aged 12-14, the study – entitledGreater Exposure to Sexual Content in Popular Movies Predicts Earlier Sexual Debut and Increased Risk-Taking” – has raised renewed concern over the potentially dangerous affect Hollywood has on adolescents. What many have found particularly disturbing is that the sexual content is not only limited to R-rated films. Researchers found that 68 percent of G, 82 percent of PG, and 85 percent of PG-13 rated movies of the 684 movies included in the study contained sexual situations.

“Impressionable children and teens are influenced by the media they consume. Over 60 years of research and over 3,000 studies now have linked violent media content and aggression, cigarette smoking in films and the likelihood teens will take-up smoking, and more recently, exposure to sexual content in entertainment and early onset of sexual activity in teens,” Melissa Henson, Director of Communications and Public Education at the Parents Television Council (PTC), an organization that monitors connections between a child’s media consumption and their behavior, told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column.

Before recruiting participants, the authors coded the movies for seconds of sexual content, which was defined as any sexual act, from passionate kissing all the way to intercourse. G-rated movies like “The Princess Diaries” contained 42 seconds of sexually-related material, PG-13 movie “Meet Joe Black” had 170 seconds, while another PG-rated movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” had 78 seconds.

Start a CBD Business: How to Sell CBD Online

The CBD market is expected to hit $22 billion by 2022.

If you have entrepreneurial tendencies, a number like that might just encourage you to set up your own online CBD store.

However, if you lack knowledge about CBD, you’re probably not sure how you can get started. You might not know how to find a good CBD supplier, for instance. You might even question how you can get people to buy from you.

Below you’ll discover some tips that’ll teach you how to sell CBD online. If you’re looking to improve your financial standing, you’ll soon learn how to turn CBD into cash.

Let’s begin!

Find a Good Supplier

The first thing you want to do is find a company that can supply you with high-quality CBD.

When going through this stage, it’s crucial you practice some caution.

That’s because some companies sell something similar to CBD, known as ‘hemp oil.’ However, this product often lacks the strength that comes with normal CBD’ and so it’s not worth investing in.

You can avoid this problem by asking the supplier about their product ahead of time. You might also want to perform a few online searches so that you can verify the reputation of a supplier, before ordering from them.

When you find a supplier that looks promising, only order a small batch of products, to begin with.

In some cases, you may want to wait and order another test batch, a few months down the line. In doing so, you can begin to understand how consistent a supplier is when it comes to the quality of their CBD.

However, for those independent artists who are trying to get their name and music out into the world, the competition can be fierce. So, how do developing artists stand out and keep themselves from being drowned in a sea of emails and mixtapes?

Well, it takes hard work and strategic planning, but it’s possible to get the attention you’re seeking through a simple and organized approach. If you are choosing to submit music to blogs with a high traffic rate, below are a few things to keep in mind when you decide to reach out.

Solidify Your Brand

Before you decide to put yourself out there, it’s important to have a full understanding of who you are as an artist. Branding is a crucial piece in making yourself memorable.

Branding yourself is a lot like putting together a puzzle that represents your artistic identity. Putting together certain pieces such as a certain font, color scheme, symbol, sound, style, or personality can cohesively create a theme in your music and artistry.

A solidified brand will show music blogs that you’re serious about making music your career. The confidence you have in knowing who you are and how to professionally represent yourself will help you stay clear of the dreaded email trash bin. And hopefully, you’ll get a positive response.

Research Before You Submit

After you’re confident in how you represent yourself to your audience, it is important to put in some extensive research before you submit music to blogs.

Reaching out to a website that promotes only rappers when you are a wedding band, such as David Rothstein Music, is completely irrational, right? Well, it happens all the time. That’s why it is important to make sure you’re not wasting your time and energy on a website or blog that doesn’t reach out to the same demographic as you.
