The 10 most overrated vacation spots in the whole world

So you're going on summer vacation. That's your first mistake. Why summer? Sure, our grandparents and parents took their vacations between June and September, but they had good reason. In their day, the summer heat brought urban life to a standstill. People who could afford it headed for the mountains and the seashore; resorts were crammed, beaches mobbed. And every summer you'll still find them that way.

But think about it: Eighty-three years have passed since Willis Carrier invented the air conditioner. That doesn't mean that summers are any less hot and humid, but at least they're bearable. If you work in an air-conditioned building and sleep in an air-conditioned bedroom, why join the summer-vacation crush? Why not save up your vacation money for some other season, when resorts are less hectic, Sunbelt beaches less crowded and prices more reasonable?

All right, it's because you're a creature of habit. You're accustomed to summer vacations and can't change. Have it your own way. But if you're determined to spend your travel money between now and September – and your vacation plans aren't yet set in concrete – a few words of advice are in order on where not to go.

I'm not talking about the vacation spots you've already been warned against – spots like Miami Beach and Atlantic City. I mean highly touted places where you'll spend an arm and a leg and return home asking your spouse, "Whose idea was that, anyway?" Here they are, then, in alphabetical order – the places cited in a survey of the well-traveled as the 10 most overrated vacation spots in the world:

ACAPULCO

Like Carmen Miranda and the vision of romantic Latin America she sold in the 1940s, this resort is strictly out of the past. It's also garish, overcrowded, overpriced and not especially hospitable to tourists from the United States.

Acapulco horror stories about tourist run-ins with the local constabulary and greedy merchants are a peso a dozen. The most frequently told stories involve U.S. tourists held by police because they were passengers in taxicabs involved in accidents.

Under Mexican law, a passenger has to have insurance in the event of an accident or spend a few hours at police headquarters untangling matters. If, however, you don't mind taking out special insurance, there are other spots in Mexico – Cancun, for example – that might satisfy your craving for sunshine and palm trees.

The Growth of Tourism in Tenerife

Tourists (mainly well-to-do British) began coming to Tenerife in significant numbers towards the end of the last century. At that time tourism was centred around the northern resort town of Puerto de la Cruz and, to a lesser extent, the island's capital Santa Cruz. Both towns boasted a handful of grandiose hotels, the most popular being the Grand Hotel Taoro in Puerto de la Cruz. Built in 1892, it was badly damaged by fire some thirty years later, and finally converted into the island's biggest gambling haven - Casino Taoro - in 1975. Today the casino is still one of the biggest in Spain.

Even a hundred years ago, Tenerife was famous for its year-round mild climate. But the big boom in tourism began in Tenerife, as in other major international holiday destinations, with the advent of affordable air travel, literally cutting days off boat journey times to places farther afield like the Canaries, and broadening the opportunities for holidaymakers all over Europe.

As foreign tourism increased, mostly from Europe, the demand specifically for 'sun, sand and sea' (and anything else beginning with 's'!) holidays increased and this gave rise to the development of resorts in the south of the Island, were the weather is generally better. Los Cristianos grew from a small fishing village to a major tourist centre, thankfully still retaining the 'old town' as it's heart. Las Americas, in contrast, had no such historic beginnings - it simply rose from a barren expanse of dry land next door to Los Cristianos, to become the island's premier holiday destination, with hotels, facilities and beaches being constructed (and still under constuction!) to meet the ever-growing demand.

The Canaries these days play host to over seven million holidaymakers per year and on Tenerife alone you will find British, German, Russian, Dutch, Scandinavian, French, Italian and, of course, Spanish among the many nationalities topping up their suntans on the beach under the relentless sun, for which the islands have become famous.

The Best Retirement Gifts Often Come From Co-workers

Retirement is not only a big transition in the retiree's life it is also a time of celebration and happy memories.  When trying to find the perfect retirement gift one must pick something that fits into their lifestyle, helps them pursue hobbies and enjoy their new found freedom.

Look for gifts that are original or suggest your ideas to other co-workers for more expensive items.  Remember that the company also gives retirement gifts and depending on how well the company values its employees is usually a pretty good indicator for the kind of gift the individual will be receiving.  Items like:  awards and plaques, ornaments, paperweights, valet key fobs, desk clocks, luggage tags, passport holders, mugs and even pen sets are all very nice personalized retirement gifts, don't get me wrong, but lets face it, they are all rather generic and may or may not be used or displayed by the retiree.

However thoughtful a gift may be, it's always best to find items the retiree can use and will appreciate.  That's why a retiree generally appreciates their co-workers gifts over the gift they receive from a company.  Some companies do however go above and beyond and will give stocks and bonds which is something every retiree can appreciate even if they are a novice.  Other companies have been known to give timepieces, crystal decanter sets or even big ticket items like timeshares or club memberships in recognition of years of service.

Giving the retiree something to look forward to in my humble opinion is the best gift to give.  Tickets to an upcoming concert, play or sporting event can be very exciting; also I found a getaway vacation booklet that lets the retiree pick their vacation.  Other items can include golfing accessories like: divot took and ball marker, shoe bag, personalized golf balls, golf shadow box, or valuables pouch.  Even fishing gear and hunting gear can be given and if you're unsure as to which item they will want, a gift certificate is always appreciated and is not as impersonal as some people may think.  Better to let the retiree pick the item they really want then to give them something they'll end up returning or worse already have.

My second favorite kind of gift to give for retirement is anything that can be personalized yet still fits into their lifestyle.  There are so many gift choices out there it's hard to list all of them here.  Here are just a few unique ideas that are memorable, fun and sure to be used and appreciated.  A poker chip set for those who love to play cards, folding beach chairs or towels for relaxing at the beach,  a throw blanket for lounging or sitting in front of a fireplace, wine carriers or totes, bar signs for the game room or home bar, crystal glassware, stemware and decanters sets to add the finishing touches to any home bar, an engraved guest book plate, T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, a vacation booklet full of vacation ideas to keep entertained during those retirement years and even a framed retirement poem are some of the items I found when looking online which are all available in a wide variety of styles, colors and themes to fit all personality types.  I even found gift baskets full of bath supplies, wine, beer and coffee along with a neat record recorder that allows all those baby boomers to record their favorite records onto a CD.

With so many choices out there it's hard to pick just one.  I always check out any company I find on the internet through the BBB (Better Business Bureau) for my own piece of mind.  Plus I like to do repeat business when shopping online as some companies give a repeat customer discount and best of all with gas prices the way they are I can shop in the privacy of my own home and have the gift delivered to me or the retiree saving me gas, time, and stress.

If the office has decided to go in on a gift together be sure to include your input as well as consider other ideas, then decide on the best choice for that individual.  When trying to find the perfect gift you can be rest assured that you'll never go wrong if you buy a gift that the retiree wants, can use and will enjoy.  A few well placed questions can be all the inspiration you need to give a great gift that will be both memorable and treasured.

Pros and Cons of Winning a National Lottery

Winning a national lottery would be a dream come true for most people. Each year, billions of dollars are spent on scratch off tickets and lottery numbers by people hoping to strike it rich.

Americans reference the national lottery when talking about games such as Powerball and Mega Millions. Much of the money for ticket sales accumulates to payout staggering multi-million dollar jackpots offered throughout the country.

In addition to national games, many states offer region-specific games through their own lottery system. National games have substantially higher payouts than state games, but the odds are considerably higher with an average of 1 in 18 million.

The largest lottery winnings ever recorded amounted to $380 million and was awarded in January 2011 through Mega Millions. The largest Powerball jackpot to be recorded was a staggering $340 million.

There's little doubt that kind of money could permanently alter a person's life. Winning millions of dollars would allow a person to do whatever they want, whenever they want and still have funds to pass along inherited wealth for several generations.

Certainly, most people would be overjoyed to win the lottery. However, as with most things in life there is a downside to receiving a windfall of cash.

One of the greatest challenges is coping with the unwanted notoriety. Many stories have circulated regarding lottery winners being bombarded with phone calls and uninvited guests arriving at their door. Winners can elect to keep their newfound wealth private by hiring a representative, like a financial adviser or attorney, to claim their lottery winnings.

Although it can be entertaining to dream about all the things lottery cash could be spent on, the truth of the matter is it's rather expensive to win jackpots. State and federal taxes can deplete over half of the winnings, so the best defense is immediately hiring an exceptional financial consultant. Professionals can help develop strategies to reduce taxes on lottery winnings.

Accepting jackpot funds as lump sum cash is more costly than accepting annual installments. Winning millions changes tax status and results in higher taxes. Financial planners can create investment plans to reduce tax burdens. This could be in the form of depositing money into an irrevocable life insurance trust or tax-sheltered retirement account such as a Roth IRA.

While the national lottery has multi-million dollar jackpots, state games also offer valuable prizes. All winnings acquired through gambling are subject to income tax and must be reported on tax returns. This includes prizes and cash won through casinos, horse or dog racing, raffles, contests, and sweepstakes.

Taxpayers can report gambling losses on tax returns as long as they provide adequate documentation. People who gamble on a regular basis should develop accounting methods and record keeping systems to track winnings and losses.

Lottery jackpot winners should consider working with an estate planning service to safeguard money for their family. Estate planners can develop strategies to reduce inheritance taxes and expand financial portfolios.

Regrettably, more than one person has spent their life savings in the quest to win the national lottery. Gambling can become a serious addiction that necessitates professional help to overcome. It is imperative to maintain control and never spend more money than you can afford to lose.
