In a gross display of wasted taxpayer dollars, dozens of Massachusetts National Guard personnel, operating under a grant from the DEA, alongside Massachusetts State Police, descended into the backyard of an 81-year-old cancer patient in a raid last week — to protect society from the dangers of his four marijuana plants.

Paul Jackson, 81, of Martha's Vineyard, grows cannabis to make medicine. His plants, along with several other plants, became the target of law enforcement last week in a crackdown on hardened criminals who'd dare to grow a plant that helps them.

Jackson was in his backyard last Tuesday when plainclothes men and a helicopter descended on his property. With no warrant, and without showing identification, these heroes ripped Jackson's plants from the ground.

"They just come charging through and start cutting it down," Jackson said in an interview with the MV Times.

According to the MV Times, Mr. Jackson, a lifelong Islander and renowned organic gardener with over 300 ribbons from the Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Fair, expressed both bewilderment and disgust when he spoke to The Times on Friday.

"I told them they don't know what they're doing, they're destroying it and it could be used for good purposes," he said. "I know because I went through it before. You wrote about it in The Times. I had the article framed, took it out to show them; I said, 'This is proof of what it does,' but they didn't want to hear it."

As the Times reports, Mr. Jackson was referring to a February 2013 article, "Love, life, and death: A Martha's Vineyard marijuana story," in which he described how cannabis tea had helped Mary, his wife of 53 years, through the pain of pancreatic cancer and the ravages of chemotherapy. Mr. Jackson said they forsook the morphine prescribed by her doctors, and substituted cannabis tea for pain management.

"I never ever saw pain in her face," he said. "She was eating and happy, right up until she died. You had to see it to believe it. People don't understand it. It's a beautiful plant and it works beautifully."

For years, Jackson has been growing this beneficial plant to help his wife, himself, and other friends in the area.

"There's another fellow I've given it to, his wife has cancer bad," he said. "They mix it with her food and it's really helping her. Another fellow had a tube down his stomach and his wife would pour [tea] down his tube for the pain. And it worked. At least there's no damn pain in it. I gave another guy some, he was taking seven different pills a day. I talked to him a month later and he said he'd gotten rid of three of those pills. It works on all kinds of different things."

However, these poor people will now suffer thanks to the public service provided by the government in their attempts to stamp out this miraculous plant.

While medical marijuana is legal in Massachusetts, to a certain extent, Jackson says he grows his own because it's far healthier.

"The people that are selling it are using chemicals that react with the chemotherapy," he said. "Mine is much better because it's organically grown. I saw it with my own eyes, I couldn't believe how well it worked."

In the interview, Jackson noted that he doesn't smoke the plant and will continue to consume it, in spite of the immoral laws that prohibit it.

"I don't like smoke and I don't like dust," he said. "We just make tea out of it. But if I need to make the tea, I've got it. I don't sell it. I will continue to have a certain amount in case somebody close to me needs it."

When word began to spread about this embarrassing action to eradicate a beneficial plant, spokesmen from the agencies involved in the raid began denying they had a hand in it.

After their heroic mission to rid Martha's Vineyard of cannabis, Colonel James Sahady, Public Affairs Officer for the Massachusetts National Guard, said in an email to the Times, "The order was initiated by the DEA and Massachusetts State Police as part of pre-planned eradication missions throughout the year."

However, Sahady later issued another statement claiming that the DEA was not involved.

On top of the National Guard's flip-flop, the Times reports:
On Tuesday, two Massachusetts State Police spokesmen checked into the matter and said there was no evidence of State Police involvement. "It was not us," Officer Tom Ryan told The Times.
In a follow up email received on Thursday, State Police spokesman David Procopio said the operation was initiated by the State Police. "We routinely request the assistance of the National Guard in these operations," Mr. Procopio said in an email to The Times. "Our Narcotics Inspection Section conducts these operations regularly across the state. We utilize a trained spotter in a helicopter to search for marijuana grow sites. Once one is located, the spotter directs ground units to the plants, which are confiscated and taken by State Police for eventual destruction. These seizures occasionally result in criminal prosecutions, but many times do not, if the plants are seized from rural or wooded areas that can be accessed by many people (as opposed to just growing in some homeowner's backyard)."
Mr. Procopio said State Police seized 392 plants, "which are slated for destruction as part of our next narcotics burn."
Although the helicopter was parked at Martha's Vineyard Airport last Tuesday night, there are no records of landing fees or fuel purchases paid by a government agency, according to airport manager Ann Crook.

"The idea we're so frivolously spending money on marijuana interdiction, especially now when it's about to be rolled back, is extremely frustrating. How many books or school lunches could have been bought instead of having these plants ripped up?" Bill Downing, spokesman for MassCan/NORML said to the Times.

Downing's sentiment is a very real concern as the war on drugs has spent upwards of a trillion taxpayer dollars since its inception. Every one of those dollars spent ruining the lives of otherwise entirely innocent people.

At any one time, 59,300 prisoners charged with or convicted of violating marijuana laws are behind bars. Of those, 17,000 are behind bars for possession ONLY, not trafficking.

Enforcing marijuana laws costs an estimated $10-15 billion in direct costs alone — not to mention the sustained costs of incarceration of the individual who has done nothing to harm anyone. It is estimated that the money spent enforcing useless marijuana laws is double what we spend on education in this country.

And I think, right now, that is the problem — that people do not trust a Food and Drug Administration, or even the CDC for that matter, where corporate influence and the pharmaceutical industry has a lot of influence."

Though her response was thoughtful and fair, Stein was still attacked for not giving a hard "no." "Please just state it in the positive: Vaccines don't cause autism," wrote Fred Brodsky on Twitter.


While Stein was unwilling to admit the link between vaccines and autism, her position on GMOs is much more hard-hitting. According to OnTheIssues.org, the Green Party candidate says she full-heartedly supports a "moratorium on GMOs until they are proven safe" – and she feels the same about pesticides.

Stein: Farmers need to produce "real food" that's sustainable

When asked as president if she would eliminate federal farm subsidies, Stein said:

"Our food system should be treated for what it is and not as a tool for agribusiness and market share. Our current subsidies drive the food system towards a very unhealthy industrialized FrankenFood type system."

"Those subsidies need to be redirected to support small farmers and to support community farms and the institutions that can provide real food in a way that is sustainable for the long haul."

"That means localized food systems rather than this globalized industrial factory system which is extremely unhealthy for the economy, farmers and for people who eat the food. The planet is being poisoned by the pesticides and the greenhouse gases that are being produced by the current system."

Stein's position on GMOs is far stronger than most candidates, and is likely one of the reasons she continues to garner support. Recent polls show Stein at 5 percent and the Libertarian nominee, Gary Johnson, at 9 percent.

Third Party candidates need to hit 13 percent in the national polls to in order to make the presidential debates.

America's "health" authorities have again been caught conspiring with Big Food to ensure their products remain on the market and lucrative, despite mounting evidence of causing widespread, chronic illness among millions of people.

The latest example of collusion between the food industry and the U.S. government involves a veteran employee with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) who was caught helping Coca-Cola and a food industry front group gain political influence over the World Health Organization (WHO).

Emails obtained through a Freedom of Information request filed by U.S. Right to Know found that Dr. Barbara Bowman, who worked as a senior nutritionist for Coca-Cola before beginning a career with the CDC in 1992, was eager to help the beverage company gain approval for its sugary drinks, which are strongly linked to obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The communications show Bowman, director of the CDC's Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, was eager to help her long time friend Alex Malaspina, a former top Coca-Cola executive and strategist who founded International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI), a Big Food industry front group.

The division led by Bowman is tasked with providing "public health leadership," working to reduce the prevalence of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. However, Bowman had another interest – helping the food industry gain approval for its unhealthy products.

"Emails from 2015 detail how Malaspina, representing the interests of Coca-Cola and the food industry, reached out to Bowman to complain that the World Health Organization was giving a cold shoulder to the chemical and food industry-funded group known as ILSI, which Malaspina founded in 1978," says USRTK journalist Carey Gillam, writing for The Huffington Post.

"The email strings include reports of concerns about Coca-Cola's new Coca-Cola Life, sweetened with stevia, and criticisms that it still contained more sugar than daily limit recommended by WHO."

WHO issues warning about sweetened beverages

The WHO has been very vocal about the importance of eliminating sugary drinks from the diet in order to reduce the risk of childhood obesity, type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems.

"Sugar-sweetened beverage consumption is high in many parts of the world and is suggestive of poor dietary quality, as sugar-sweetened beverages contain added sugars such as sucrose or fructose, often in large amounts, which contribute to the overall energy density of diets," said the WHO in January.

"The calories provided by sugar-sweetened beverages have little nutritional value and may not provide the same feeling of fullness that solid food provides. As a result, total energy intake may increase which can lead to unhealthy weight gain."

This of course, infuriated Coca-Cola, prompting Malaspina to ask Bowman for help in setting up a conversation with the WHO to try and influence their recommendations on sugary drinks.

Coca-Cola: "The threat to our business is serious"

Several top executives with Coca-Cola and ILSI were copied on the emails sent to Bowman. They expressed grave concern regarding "negative reports about products with high sugar content, and sugary soda tax plans in Europe," reports Gillam.

Actions by the WHO could have "significant negative consequences on a global basis," said Malaspina in the email chain. "The threat to our business is serious."

Included on the correspondence were Coca-Cola Chief Public Affairs and Communications Officer Clyde Tuggle and the company's Chief Technical Officer Ed Hays. Malaspina told Bowman that "something must be done" about the WHO not wanting "to work with industry."

CDC recommends beverage company contact Bill Gates

Bowman tells the Coca-Cola execs that either Bill Gates or "Bloomberg people" may be able to get him access to the WHO, suggesting they also reach out to someone at the PEPFAR program, a U.S.-backed program addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa.

"WHO is key to the network," confirms Bowman, adding that she "will be in touch about getting together." Malaspina proceeds to thank Bowman for the good leads before suggesting they meet for dinner soon.

The CDC has yet to assume any responsibility for the inappropriate communications. Bowman's boss, Ursula Bauer, Director at the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, said she doesn't find the relationship a conflict-of-interest.

Though Bauer defended Bowman's actions, she admitted in an email to staffers that Gillam's article doesn't bode well for the agency. The "perception that some readers may take from the article is not ideal," said Bauer.

She reminded CDC employees that if they wouldn't want to see it on the front page of the newspaper, they shouldn't be doing it.

All of the emails but one were sent from Bowman's personal account. Bowman announced a "late retirement" shortly after the emails broke, not mentioning the revelations about her Coca-Cola connections.

Bauer applauded Bowman's work in another email sent to staffers, saying she "served with distinction and has been a strong, innovative, dedicated and supportive colleague."
