Gavin Long joins a growing list of killers who were hooked on psychotropic "medications" prior to their rampages. The shooter in Orlando was also on psychotropic drugs, furthering the sickening trend of prescription drug-induced violence.

There have been at least 134 drug regulatory agency warnings from 11 countries, decrying the dangerous side effects of psychotropic drugs. Over 150 studies from 17 different countries point out the violent dangers of antidepressants, which include delusions, self inflicted harm, hostility toward others and homicidal ideation.

Knowing this, why has the use of these drugs skyrocketed by 400 percent since 1988? Why are 11 percent of all Americans, 12 years and over, on some kind of psychotropic drug today?

Why aren't we going after and banning every single dose of these "medications" that propel violence and murder? Shouldn't these pills be forbidden, rounded up, locked into a vault, buried deep within the Earth and melted down into magma?

Nearly half a century has passed since Monsanto scientist John Franz first discovered glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, which today is sprayed heavily all over the globe, including on our food and water, and in recreational areas where people go for leisure.

However, it is only now that scientists are beginning to truly understand the way this insidious chemical affects not only wildlife and the environment, but also the human body and its intricate biological functions.

A recent review of the scientific literature conducted by independent researchers Anthony Samsel, Ph.D. and Stephanie Seneff, Ph.D. – a scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) – uncovered some disturbing information about the way glyphosate interferes with the structure and functionality of important proteins in the human body.

What they learned is that glyphosate behaves as a glycine analogue that incorporates peptides during protein synthesis, according to AlterNet. In other words, the herbicide alters various proteins dependent "on conserved glycine for proper function."

When the human body substitutes glyphosate for glycine, it leads to a host of serious illnesses including diabetes, obesity, asthma, Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Parkinson's disease, among other conditions, according to the study's authors.

"Glycine, the smallest amino acid commonly found in proteins, has unique properties that support flexibility and the ability to anchor to the plasma membrane or the cytoskeleton.

"This new direct biological evidence, taken together with correlational data, make a compelling case that glyphosate action as a glycine analogue accounts for much of glyphosate's toxicity," explains AlterNet, interpreting the researchers' data.

Researchers say that when glyphosate behaves as an amino acid analogue of glycine, it can be incorporated into polypeptide chains during protein synthesis, which in turn affects the structure and function of important proteins in the human body.

Metabolic and regulatory processes may be disrupted by widely used herbicide

"Proteins fold up, and glycine is a small molecule that is often found at the folding places. Since glyphosate is much larger, it prevents the protein molecule from folding properly, leading to the disruption of function of many proteins with essential roles in metabolism and regulatory processes."

Samsel and Seneff highlight a number of ways that this may affect humans, as well as other organisms, including the potential that "impaired fatty acid release" could lead to obesity and diabetes, because the chemical can disrupt the behavior of insulin receptors.

The researchers observed that glyphosate may prevent proteins from folding properly, causing "impaired one-carbon metabolism," leading to neural tube defects and autism.

It's highly plausible that the herbicide may also disrupt "cell cycle control during DNA synthesis, and disregulated phosphorylation cascades," which can end up causing cancer, complications with the lungs and autoimmune diseases.

Needless to say, the adverse effects glyphosate has on humans and other living things is absolutely frightening, and we still don't understand the full extent of its impact. Nearly every chronic illness affecting Americans today can be traced back to glyphosate.

Yet, we can't even get our regulatory agencies (namely the EPA) to recognize its carcinogenic effects, let alone the host of other debilitating, painful diseases it's causing among humans.

"When a cell is trying to form proteins, it may grab glyphosate instead of glycine to form a damaged, mis-folded protein. After that it's medical chaos. Where glyphosate replaces glycine, the cell can no longer conduct business as usual causing unpredicted consequences with many diseases and disorders as a result," explains Stephen Frantz, Ph.D., a research pathobiologist.

The year was 2014 and California just passed Assembly Bill 2109 in the face of widespread opposition. The bill was designed to make it harder for parents to receive vaccine exemptions for their children. During this time, the slippery slope of forced vaccination in the state was just getting started. Few communities, parents or advocacy groups were fighting for health freedom.

The most basic of all human rights is the ability to have control over your own body and be able to exercise informed consent when making medical decisions that can harm you or your child.

There is a concerted effort by the pharmaceutical industry, medical trade groups and their lobbyists and our paid elected representatives in state and federal government to persuade legislators to abolish rights that individuals and parents have in making informed choices about what is best for their health and their children's health.

In 1986, Congress passed the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act and declared that government licensed and recommended vaccines are "unavoidably unsafe." In 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court said the same thing when they shielded vaccine manufacturers from vaccine injury lawsuits: vaccines are "unavoidably unsafe." Their words.

All pharmaceutical products, like prescription drugs and vaccines, carry a risk of permanent injury or death. No drug or vaccine is 100 percent safe or effective 100 percent of the time. It is also true that, as individuals, we do not all respond the same way to drugs and vaccines.

When there is a risk of permanent injury or death from any drug or vaccine, we must have a choice. If choice is taken away and people are forced to use any drug or vaccine licensed and mandated by our government, then we are no longer a free people but live in state sponsored medical tyranny.

There is also a problem with vaccine failures and waning vaccine immunity. Public health officials, medical trade groups and pharmaceutical companies admit that vaccine immunity is only temporary and sometimes they give no protection at all. In other words, vaccines don't always work! In the case of the pertussis vaccine, whooping cough outbreaks often occur in individuals who are completely up to date with the CDC's schedule of recommended shots.

Over THREE BILLION DOLLARS has been paid out to vaccine injured children and adults by the federal vaccine injury compensation program (VICP) under the 1986 Vaccine Injury Act. Because so few parents know about deadlines for filing vaccine injury claims in the VICP, most vaccine injured children never get their day in "Vaccine Court" and, even when they do, the government rejects compensation for two out of three vaccine injury claims.

The fact that Congress and the Supreme Court have given pharmaceutical companies and doctors COMPLETE IMMUNITY from product liability and personal injury lawsuits is a big red flag for parents being pressured to give their children dozens of doses of "unavoidably unsafe" vaccines. Parents look around and see so many chronically ill children in America, even though most children have gotten the CDC recommended 49 doses of 14 vaccines before age six. That is twice as many vaccinations as children got in the early 1980's and three times as many vaccinations as children get in Europe.

While our children today have gotten more vaccines than any other generation before them, there has been an explosion in the numbers of chronically ill children in the U.S. Over 50 percent (actually 54%) of our nation's children now live with these chronic diseases in numbers that were unheard of just a few short decades ago: ADHD and learning disabilities, peanut allergies, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, childhood diabetes and obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, and children who suffer brain swelling (encephalitis) and seizures and are diagnosed with autism.

Instead of having a real discussion about why the most precious members of our society are suffering from this new onslaught of chronic illnesses and brain injuries, anyone who raises questions about vaccine safety and dares question the (paid) medical and pharmaceutical industrial complex is labeled and ridiculed as an "Anti-Science Anti- Vaxxer."

The media fueled hysteria over the reporting of measles cases at Disneyland last year, when only 189 children and adults in a country with over 320 million people got measles, was used as an excuse to hammer through legislation in California that removed the personal belief vaccine exemption, including for religious and conscientious beliefs. Only 2.5 percent of children attending kindergarten in California had a personal belief exemption on file but those children will be blocked from getting a school education starting in the fall.

Now there is a concerted effort by public health officials to mandate vaccines for adults, too. Health care workers are being fired if they don't get an annual flu shot, which CDC admits is a vaccine that doesn't work half the time!

With hundreds of new vaccines being developed by industry and government, it is very important that we protect our legal right to exercise informed consent to vaccination for ourselves and our children because our civil rights also are being threatened if vaccination is tied to our ability to get an education, a job or medical care.

Over the years, mixing energy drinks and alcohol has developed into a trend among the younger generation. While RTD (Ready to Drink) alcohol energy drinks, such as Four Loco, are almost impossible to find these days, their disappearance from the market hasn't stopped many youngsters from chasing the caffeinated alcohol kick.

The ban on the once hugely popular pre-mixed energy alcohol drinks simply led to RTD-lovers mixing up their own, such as the famous Jagerbomb or vodka red bull – two favorite party staples at most college parties or nightclubs.

A recent study, however, suggests that there may be some hidden dangers lurking in these popular party drinks.

Stimulating the desire to drink more alcohol

Scientists at Northern Kentucky University found that mixing caffeinated energy drinks with alcohol results in a greater desire to consume more alcohol – more so than if you were just drinking alcohol alone or combined with a non-caffeinated mixer.

For the study, published in the journal Alcoholism Clinical and Experimental Research, scientists asked 26 adult social drinkers – 13 men and 13 women – to drink alcohol, an energy or soft drink, or a combination of both.

Over the course of six days, they were given either: vodka and a decaffeinated soft drink; vodka and a medium energy drink; vodka and a large energy drink; a decaffeinated soft drink; a medium energy drink; or a large energy drink.

After each session, the volunteers were asked to rate their desire for another drink, and their breath alcohol concentration was measured.

The results revealed that the consumption of alcohol in combination with a high-caffeinated energy drink stimulated the desire to drink more, when compared to consuming the same amount of alcohol alone or combined with a non-caffeinated mixer.

According to the researchers, these findings are in line with previous animal studies which also showed an increased craving for alcohol when mixed with an energy drink. They believe that caffeine increases the rewarding and reinforcing properties of alcohol.

Caffeine masks the intoxicating effect

It is actually not the first time that the consumption of energy drinks and alcohol has been proven to be a dangerous combination.

Previous research showed that the caffeine in energy drinks masks the intoxicating effect of alcohol, meaning that people who drink these beverages are prone to drinking too much and often engage in binge drinking.

Another study, conducted at Dartmouth's Norris Cotton Cancer Center, found that teenagers (aged between 15 and 17) who regularly mix energy drinks and alcohol, are four times more likely to develop an alcohol problem later in life.

As reported by the Daily Mail, a Brazilian professor, Roseli Boergnen de Lacerda, warns that there is a significantly higher risk of car accidents because these people don't fully realize how drunk they are.

Furthermore, researchers note that people who drink these mixers are more likely to show problematic behavior such as drunk driving, alcohol abuse and risky sex. The caffeine rush creates a greater sense of balance, making the drinker believe they are not actually drunk.

Energy drinks are bad news

In addition to increasing risky behavior, energy drinks come with a host of other health risks, especially when combined with alcohol. According to the Caffeine Informer, energy drinks, shots and other high-caffeine beverages may lead to cardiac events, seizures and death.

Furthermore, the consumption of these drinks has been linked to developmental problems, poor sleep and an increased risk of aggressive and self-harming behavior. Finally, excessive consumption of the B vitamins present in energy drinks may result in liver and nerve damage.

A growing number of parents across the nation are now going against the recommendations of the CDC vaccine schedule – which currently promotes the injecting of 49 doses of various vaccines before a child turns 6 years old. The number of parents opting out of the onslaught of childhood vaccinations has doubled since 2009. As vaccine use plummets, state legislatures are trying to find new ways to bully parents into the vaccination cycle.

A new bill in Ohio (HB 564) seeks to intimidate parents into vaccine compliance by forcing them to be re-educated about the benefits of vaccines. Ohio parents will no longer be allowed to send their children to public schools unless they see a state-licensed medical doctor first to receive such re-education. If the parent objects to a vaccine, and determines it's not worth the risk to their child, they will no longer get to make that choice freely. This law will put parents under the control of the medical system by denying any philosophical exemption the parent may have.

Since vaccines are a medical procedure, informed consent should always be required. However, if this law were to pass, the government could make extremely risky medical decisions without parental consent. HB 564 allows school administrators to vaccinate children without parental consent, if officials deem it necessary.

The state is claiming ownership of children's bodies, trampling on the natural rights and convictions of parents

If Ohio parents object to a vaccine, they will be required by law to report to and get permission from a state-licensed medical doctor. The doctor is then required by the state to bully the parents with pro-pharmaceutical propaganda that makes vaccines look like perfect medical science. If the parents still object to the vaccine after the doctor has tried to forcibly brainwash them, they can then try to obtain a "religious exemption." At this stage, many parents will just go along to get along because it's easier to comply than argue with a doctor or be investigated, harassed, and/or profiled.

Under the pressure of this new medical system dictate, it will be easier for parents to just let go of their natural born rights and throw away their own education, experiences and convictions on vaccines. If parents continue to object, doctors will easily feel threatened and may attempt to call in the CPS to kidnap the child and put them into state custody. This is a growing problem around the country.

At the end of day, parents won't be able to obtain a "religious exemption" to the vaccines unless the medical doctor and the state give them permission. In this way, parents are being turned into slaves of the state, and essentially slaves of the pharmaceutical companies which ultimately control the science, the law and the minds of medical professionals.

Most disturbingly, the state is essentially claiming ownership over children's bodies. If parents want to use the public school education system (most parents have no choice), they must sign their sovereign, parental rights away to the state, subjecting their children to being pincushions for endless vaccine and pharmaceutical experiments.

Parents don't need permission to raise healthy and independent children

Why should parents be forced to vaccinate their children endlessly for benign illnesses that the body can build natural, lifelong immunity to?

Why should parents be forced to retrain their child's entire immune system (weakening natural first line defenses) with ongoing shots?

Why should parents fear diseases that have statistically been overcome in communities with proper hygiene, sanitation and nutrition?

How many micrograms of aluminum are in those 49 vaccine doses, and how do they affect children's neurological development?

These questions (and many more concerns of parents) will not be answered, or in fact entertained at all in Ohio, because the medical system may soon have the authority of the law to ram pro-vaccine propaganda down parents' throats, intimidating them into vaccine compliance, barring their children from public school attendance, or vaccinating them against a parent's will.

Vaccines (singularly or in compounding doses) can damage children subtly or dramatically for life. More people are recognizing this and saying NO. No parent needs permission or an exemption to make a medical decision for their own body or for the bodies of their children.

Of the many challenges facing athletes in the upcoming Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics, perhaps none is more daunting than what is likely to be encountered by those competing in sailing and rowing events.

The problem is with pollution and floating rubbish in the water where these competitions will be held. Not only is there an issue with the huge amount of floating debris in Guanabara Bay – which may cause logistical problems for sailors – but there are potential health risks as well, due to raw sewage and other contaminants present in the water.

A pair of Australian sailors, Mat Belcher and Will Ryan, who happen to be the favorites in the 470 class sailing competition, say that the debris is hampering their training efforts in the weeks leading up to the Games.

Belcher and Ryan said that the floating rubbish could also affect the actual competition, if greater efforts are not made to clean up the bay before the competitions begin.

The massive amount of floating trash, which includes everything from dead animals to discarded furniture, is causing the sailors to have to stop at times so that they can clean debris from their boat's foil (rudder) before continuing to sail.

"Two or three times a day we would be caught up with rubbish on our foil," Belcher told the Australian Associated Press. "We need to stop, slow the boat down completely and raise our foils."

Belcher said he hopes that things will improve before the Games begin, but expressed fears that the rubbish could have a big effect on the medal race, despite assurances on the part of organizers.

'There's all sorts of rubbish'

Belcher and Ryan have encountered the same problem in previous racing events held in Rio. In fact, the pair almost lost their gold medal-winning lead in a 2014 Rio race when they were forced to stop and clean debris from the boat.

The pair have made nine trips to Rio over the past three years, encountering chairs, coolers, plastic bags and aluminum cans while racing, but they say they have seen improvements, particularly in Marina da Gloria, where raw sewage was a major problem until recent cleanup efforts were carried out.

Belcher said:

"Inside the marina there's been a dramatic improvement, it's much more pleasant than having a raw sewage outlet where you launch your boat.

"But the water is still polluted and there's a lot of rubbish. We're hoping organisers can clean that up as we get closer to the Games.

"There's all sorts of rubbish - dead animals, furniture, plastic bags, a lot of coke cans."

The water pollution problems in Rio are not limited to the bay and marina, however. Last year, water samples taken from the lagoon where rowing and canoeing events will be held, detected high levels of microbial contamination.

U.S. rowing team will wear anti-microbial training suits

Fear of contracting illnesses from the contaminated water has prompted the U.S. rowing team to acquire specially-designed antimicrobial training suits to protect them.

The one-piece suits are made with an anti-microbial finish, and are also designed to be water-repellent. The maker, Boathouse Sports, says that the suits may be adopted for the actual racing events if the team likes the way they perform in training.

Between the fears of water pollution, floating debris, questionable food, Zika virus and rampant Rio crime and violence, the 2016 Summer Games could turn out to be as dangerous and challenging as any Olympic competition the world has ever seen.

Hopefully, the city will be sufficiently cleaned up and ready for competition when the Games begin on August 5.

News broke earlier this week that at least 64 women experiencing adverse health effects from cervical cancer vaccines, are filing damages lawsuits against the Japanese government and the drug makers who produced the vaccines in the first place.

Filing in four different district courts, the Tokyo District Court, the Nagoya District Court, the Osaka District Court and the Fukuoka District Court, each victim is demanding 15 million yen.

The average age of the women involved is 18 years old, with each receiving the vaccination between the ages of 11 and 16.

Cervical cancer vaccine causes adverse health reactions

Cervical cancer vaccines have been known to cause adverse health reactions, including nerve disorders and other alarming immune reactions.

According to Japan Times, "Cervical cancer vaccines were included in routine vaccination programs in April 2013." After hearing numerous reports of women suffering strange, harmful side effects as a result of receiving the vaccine, the Japanese government stopped recommending cervical cancer vaccines two months later.

That changed in April of this year though, when the Japan Pediatric Society and other institutes recommended the issuance of the controversial vaccines, claiming "it is clear they are effective in preventing cervical cancer," as reported by Japan Times.

Masumi Minaguchi, one of the lawyers representing the women filing the lawsuit, elaborated on his belief that the government and drug producers are responsible for the damages his clients have experienced. Claiming that the victims' symptoms include pain all over the body, Minaguchi told Japan Times, "We aim to clarify the responsibilities of the government and the drugmakers through the lawsuits so that the victims can live without anxiety."

This isn't the first time people have voiced their concerns about cervical cancer vaccines. Nevertheless, the HPV vaccine – a method of treatment to prevent the contraction of the human papillomavirus, a known cause of the development of cervical cancer – has been strongly recommended by doctors across the U.S.

According to CBS News, "There's a growing concern that more parents are stopping their children from receiving the shots because of unwarranted safety concerns."

Between 2008 and 2010, the number of parents who refused to give their children the HPV vaccine specifically because of safety concerns nearly quadrupled, from 4.5 percent to 16 percent.

"I'm not sure what has gone into that increase," Dr. Paul Darden, a pediatrician at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City said.

Perhaps it was the 12,424 cases of adverse health reactions, resulting in 32 deaths, that were reported in June 2006, as a result of the 23 million doses that had been administered up to that date.

Whatever it is, those suffering negative side effects associated with HPV vaccinations are not happy, and are seeking retribution.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced that it will not regulate the entire forthcoming generation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), allowing new genetically engineered (GE) foods to enter the food supply without any testing or permitting process. This "free pass" by the USDA will also allow these new GMOs to be legally marketed as "non-GMO," including in states such as Vermont that have passed GMO labeling laws.

The technologies in question are part of a suite of techniques known (inaccurately) as "gene editing." And foods made with "gene edited" ingredients are already being sold to consumers.

Calling it 'non-GMO' doesn't make it true

Gene editing consists of using enzymes to splice out a strand of DNA at a targeted location, combined with another technique (such as insertion of a "DNA template") to guide the DNA's natural repair process to insert a preferred gene.

Gene editing techniques include clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR), zinc finger nucleases (ZFN), transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs) and oligonucleotide directed mutagenesis (ODM). The latter technique consists of injecting synthetic DNA into cells, thereby triggering cells to mutate and mimic the synthetic DNA.

What none of these techniques involves is the old method of physically inserting a strand of DNA from a separate species. Thus, organisms produced by gene editing could not be accurately called "transgenic." Yet, to deny that they are genetically modified flies in the face of both the plain and scientific meanings of the terms GE and GMO – and, notably, even the legal definitions of the European Union.

Nevertheless, the USDA recently announced that a new slow-browning variety of mushroom, produced via CRISPR, would not be regulated as a GMO, and could be sold to consumers without further testing or approval.

The implications of this are far-reaching, and not just because of the ongoing battle over whether a voluntary federal labeling standard will preempt laws in states such as Vermont. Almost 17 percent of the new food products sold in the United States in 2015 were labeled non-GMO, compared with only 3 percent just four years prior. And, according to a recent survey by market research firm Mintel, 52 percent of U.S. consumers seek out non-GMO products.

Canada has announced that foods made with "gene editing" will be regulated as "novel" products, just like transgenic GMOs. The European Union is still considering the question.

Products already at a store near you

Gene edited foods are already big business. A new herbicide-resistant canola variety engineered with gene editing is already making its way into oil sold to consumers. A soybean variety engineered to produce oil that can withstand higher heat is due to hit the market as early as 2018. Other "edited" GMOs in the works include a low-gluten wheat variety, and a potato that produces lower levels of acrylamide, a chemical linked with cancer (but found mostly in cigarettes and the breakdown products of industrial chemicals, including Roundup). Every major biotech company is investing heavily in gene editing research.

These companies are also investing in a propaganda blitz designed to convince regulators and consumers that gene editing is fundamentally different from "genetic engineering" – that it is safer, more precise and more accurate. All of these assertions are myths, says geneticist and virologist Jonathan Latham, executive director of the Bioscience Resource Project and editor of Independent Science News.

Doug Gurian-Sherman, director of sustainable agriculture at the Center for Food Safety, agrees. He says that the claims made about gene editing – namely, that it will solve problems such as disease and hunger – mirror the same false promises made about GMOs in the 1990s.

"This is largely unproven," he said. "There's a proclivity to believe we can develop new, useful technology that will answer tough problems."

The term 'Abaya' has many definitions and often there is a difference over what an original Abaya looks like, what it consists of and what colours it comes in. The traditional Abaya is a black long cloak (one piece) that covers everything below the shoulder except hands and feet. This abaya garment is commonly worn among the Middle Eastern khaleeji (gulf) women.


An Abaya is quite similar to a Jilbab in the fact that both of them cover the entire body. But a Jilbab has the sleeves stitched to the main body of the cloak. Abayas traditionally come with embroidery on the neck, sleeves or base hem.

Modern day Abayas worn by the younger generation are moving away from the traditional embellishment on the garment. Aside from being studied as a possible preventative treatment for lymphoma, prostate cancer, breast cancer and metastatic cancer, broccoli has now been proven to fight age-related vision loss. To use broccoli's levels of naturally occurring I3C to treat human vision loss, lead researcher Arvind Ramanathan, PhD, knew there would be some challenges.

Since broccoli's levels of I3C are not sufficient enough to activate a substantial protective effort against AMD, Ramanathan conducted a series of virtual screenings to find a compound related to I3C that would bind to AhR proteins within the retina more effectively.

After thorough investigation, Ramanathan and his team found a compound 10 times more potent than I3C, called 2,2'-aminophenyl indole, or 2AI. "2AI protected human retinal cells in culture from stress," Ramanathan said. "And it also protected retinal cells in mice from light-mediated damage."

Since environmental stress is one of, if not the main contributor to age-related macular vision loss, 2AI's ability to protect cells from stress related degeneration means its future role in preventing AMD could be crucial.

Ramanathan also spoke of the discovery of additional naturally occurring compounds that could aid in the prevention of age-related diseases. After the successful findings of his IC3-broccoli study, Ramanathan encourages others to conduct similar studies, stating: "This method allows us to capitalize on nature's wisdom to find related molecules that can deliver therapeutic benefit."

It has only been in comparatively recent times that public attention has been directed to the harmful effects of black mold on humans. The scientific name for what is usually referred to as 'black mold' is genus Stachybotris and species chartarum. The organism is also known as Stachybotris atra or Stachybotrys alternans.

The first scientific notice of the black mold was taken by a Czech scientist in 1837 Prague. August Carl Josef Corda noted that the substance required moisture to grow. The significance of the organism in producing unhealthy conditions in buildings was not suspected until the second quarter of the last century (1900). It was then postulated that the fungus was the cause of leprosy in ancient times. But proof of this theory has never been pursued. Although its toxic properties were known, the black mold was not considered a major health risk until the 1980's.


In 1986 a family residing in Chicago asked for medical assistance and advice about chronic afflictions that had been affecting all their members for some years. Proceeding on the assumption that the pathological signs were caused by the inhalation of pollutants, it was verified that the air inside the Chicago home was replete with spores of Stachybotrys chartarum. It was subsequently discovered that the house itself had colonies of the black mold in most areas, a condition which was induced by the persistent high moisture content of its environment. Specifically, the family members experienced fatigue, chronic states of diarrhea, fevers and colds. Lucky for these people the conditions were remedied in time and no untoward incidents occurred.

The first hint at the possible fatal effects of black mold on humans occurred during the tragedy in Cleveland, Ohio which occurred between 1993 and 1994. Out of 45 infants suffering from pulmonary hemorrhage, sixteen died. It was later confirmed that there were colonies of Stachybotrys chartarum in the infants' homes. Although some scientists question the validity of the logic associating the deaths with black mold, the incident has become a primary motivator for research in this area to be conducted intensively.


Scientific research has so far proven that the conjectures and fears of the previous generation concerning the toxicity of black mold are all based on fact. The relatively recent scientific evidence accounts for the fact that not many people are aware of this danger and not many homeowners have even heard about mold-removal as being an important requirement for maintaining a healthy home environment.

Specifically, people whose home environments have a moisture content of 55 % and above are very likely to have colonies of black mold hidden behind the wall boards, inside the ceiling or under their floors. Those who live in humid environments owe it to themselves to avail of a hygrometer. This is a device that reports the current moisture content of the air. A dangerous new strain of drug-resistant yeast infection is spreading throughout the globe, and may soon reach the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

The deadly strain, called Candida auris, has killed 60 percent of patients who developed the fungal infection, and is resistant to most anti-fungal drugs commonly used to treat such infections.

"Most people are familiar with the garden variety kind of yeast infections that people get on the skin or in their genitals. But invasive yeast infections can be fatal, especially for patients in intensive care or having surgery. Others at risk include people with diabetes, patients taking powerful antibiotics and antifungal medications, and those with catheters.

"This emerging strain of yeast, known as Candida auris, has triggered outbreaks in health-care settings, causing bloodstream, wound and ear infections. Since 2009, the pathogen has been found in nine countries on four continents, including one possible infection in the United States in 2013."

Hard to identify, difficult to treat

CDC officials issued an alert to healthcare facilities and medical associations that said: "CDC is concerned that C. auris will emerge in new locations, including the United States."

The concern is that two, and possibly all three, of the classes of anti-fungal drugs currently used to treat such infections may not be effective against C. auris, according to CDC fungus expert, Tom Chiller.

Another problem is that the strain may be easily misidentified:

"Invasive infections with any type of Candida can be fatal. Based on information from a limited number of patients, 60 percent of people with this new type of Candida infection have died, but it's not clear how many of them had other serious illnesses that also increased their risk of death.

"Most hospital labs in the United States also don't have the capacity to identify the new strain because it can be confused with other more common types of yeast. As a result, misidentification could lead to inappropriate treatment, he [Chiller] said.

"That's particularly important with this organism because the limited data so far suggests that the infections have occurred primarily in patients who were already in the hospital for other reasons. Unlike other types of yeast that typically spread from person to person, 'this one seems to get into hospital settings and stay there,' Chiller said, and may spread from contact with the environment, such as contaminated surfaces or equipment."
